The Continuo Mourns
Sharon Kay Smith Redman
January 5, 1943 - July 3, 2006
Sharon Kay Smith Redman, 63, co-owner of Redman Organ Co., founded in
1971, and librarian for the Youth Orchestra of Greater Fort Worth,
passed away Monday, July 3, 2006. A memorial service was held at 4 p.m.,
Thursday, July 6, at First Jefferson Unitarian Universalist Church in
Fort Worth, TX.
Born in Abilene, TX, Sharon started playing the piano at age 12. She
continued studying music, and earned a bachelor of
arts degree in music from Southern Methodist University. There she met
Roy Redman, who played the violin and shared her love for music. They
were married Sept. 10, 1965. Sharon was the driving influence behind
her sons, Robert and Sean, becoming music majors and playing the violin.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Alvin Redman; father, Merrill Vance
Smith; sons, Robert Merrill Redman and Sean Benjamin Redman; daughter,
Caroline Elizabeth Ortega and husband, Charles; brother, Vance Richard
Smith; sister, Catherine Virginia McDowell and husband, John Leander
McDowell II; and grandchild, Aaron Homero Ortega. She was preceded in
death by her mother, Catherine Virginia Smith; and son, Brian Charles
Redman.
Sharon was a gifted organ pipe decorator, and a beautiful example of
her work may be seen locally in the organ in Tougaloo College's
Woodworth Chapel. The main facade, which she restored to its original
appearance, is from the 1902 Murray Harris organ. The two side panels
flanking the facade are display pipes from the Hilborne Roosevelt
organ (Opus 291, 1885), whose pipes now provide most of the sound of
the organ. To view the facade, the side pipes, and the chapel,
