AN ACOUSTICAL TOUR OF FOUR WORSHIP SPACES DESIGNED BY THOMAS BIGGS,
MAY 10, 2002,

   This program, presented four times but at different places,
began with organ music played by Robert Knupp and featuring music
of Frank Bridge. This was followed with comments by architect
Richard David, a J.S. Bach unaccompanied piece for cello played
by Bennett Randman, and ended with the a capella singing
of the hymn "O God Our Help" by the audience.

  The churches were - in order - Northminster Baptist, Covenant
Presbyterian, St. Richard's Catholic, and St. Philip's Episcopal. At
St. Richard's church, Betty Allen, Bigg's eldest child, made some
interesting comments about her father. All these spaces have been
used very effectively for concerts, depending on the nature of the
music involved. St. Richard's is easily the "livest" of the rooms;
St. Philip's is the most intimate, and Covenant and Northminster are
in between, but all are unusual both visually and acoustically.

   Jackson is indeed fortunate to have had Thomas Biggs in its midst.
