ROBERT KNUPP AT THE EPISCOPAL CHAPEL OF THE CROSS, FEBRUARY 24, 2002

Knupp included two Bach works (Prelude and Fugue in F Minor and in
E Minor) in a varied program designed to show the versatility of the
Holtkamp "Martini" organ (from the 1960s) recently installed in the 150
year old Chapel of the Cross. The oldest piece was Tiento de Medio Registro
de Tiple, by Arauxo (1576-1654), which showed off the "Schalmei" (a
baroque reed stop) to great advantage. One of the several pieces from
the last 50 years, Michael Burkhardt's arrangement of "In Babilone", was
my favorite of the program. The organ, composed of six very carefully
laid out ranks, was originally meant as a practice organ, but Knupp showed
that it could function as a worship instrument. It would have been good
if there had been a congregational hymn, as support of this activity is
probably what this organ can do best in such a setting.
