ROBERT KNUPP, ORGAN, AND THE PERRY COMBS STRING QUARTET AT FONDREN
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, OCTOBER 6, 2002

Knupp opened the program with a fiery and dramatic performance
of Max Reger's Introduction and Passacaglia, followed by Bach's
Prelude and Fugue in Eb (BWV 552). Between the Prelude and Fugue
he played Bach's Chorale Prelude "Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland"
(BWV 659). The Bach works were played with vigor, and were
articulated to match the acoustics.

Additional members of the Combs' quartet were Christine Knupp,
violin; Paul Fowler, viola; and Charles Patton, cello. They played
Mozart's Quartet K 157. Their intonation, balance, and rhythm was
good throughout; the last movement (Presto) was my favorite.

Finally, Combs, Christine Knupp and Robert Knupp played Vivaldi's
Sonata da camera (Opus 1) nos. I and IV. The organ was varied,
contrasting, and, like the violins, very effective.

Altogether this was a very pleasant program.
